ABOUT THE DESIGNER

“My wish is that when people experience one of my pieces, they connect to the natural vibrations of the stones and craftsmanship; with the intent to also inspire to be more mindful of these marvelous treasures that we wear as talismanic motifs of beauty and omnipresent energy.”

Sophonia represents Love and Light between Three sisters who are creative artists in their unique ways!

In my homeland, beautiful Guyana. I had an uncle who was a first-generation jeweler. I spent a lot of time with him at his workshop from the age of 5 observing him create art. Every piece he created was so beautifully done because he loved what he was doing and it was his way of expressing himself. It was him who made me fall in love with jewelry making and that love stayed with me. The ability to express and create freely without judgment but only appreciation for a piece of jewelry that would resonate with one’s soul.

At the age of 16, moving to America felt like a big step in my life, for me it was the place where dreams come through. As challenging as it was juggling two schools and working at such a tender age, the anticipation, determination, and excitement to excel kept me driven. Coming to America had many challenges, it was expected but I persevered. My first job was at a jewelry store in a mall and two years later I was allowed to work at a very reputable jewelry company in the diamond district. There I worked for 12 years, full time I was a jewelry coordinator, and part-time I was a jewelry designer/maker and nurse aide. My journey there was the stepping stone for me, it was my passion and it felt like destiny to be within the industry, many thanks to the designer who was kind enough to encourage the opportunity.

The ones I hold closest to me are the ones I value the most in life. My biggest inspiration and strength has always been my mother. To see another human sacrifice so much of herself to always protect & provide in ways so selfless and being such a pure soul with so much love to offer. The love I share for my sisters Sophia and Sonia runs deep. In 2015 I created SOPHONIA in New York City.

After the loss of my Father, my life changed drastically, but this led to personal and continuing growth. Change is inevitable and necessary, it is what gives us the opportunity to either rise or fall. I choose to rise. Less fortunate children motivated me to start this brand so that I can create safe havens for them as they are deserving of love just as anyone else in this world. My mission is to create jewelry to express and spread unconditional love to humanity. By doing this I can create better futures for children of the world, one piece at a time, this will help my mission one child at a time.
